About Rice Quarter Horses
Bob and JoAnn Rice began breeding Quarter Horses in the mid 1970’s. Their operation quickly outgrew their small ranchette in Tempe, Arizona so in 1980 they made the move to Chandler where they expanded their breeding program and began offering boarding for the city dwellers who wanted to own their own horse. While in Chandler, they featured sires that were sons and grandsons of Two Eyed Jack, Senor Rubio, Coldstream Guard, Mach 1, Doc Bar, and Colonel Freckles. It was during this time of growth that Bob and JoAnn brought Lou Childs on as a partner to assist with the operations of managing the ranch. Over the next several years their broodmares were proving to produce quality performance and ranch prospects and became well known throughout the southwest, suggesting another expansion was on the horizon. In 2005 Rice Quarter Horses moved to its current location in Casa Grande, Arizona where they continue to produce top quality Quarter Horses.
Bob, JoAnn, and Lou have been active with horses their entire lives on working ranches and in training, showing, and breeding operations, bringing decades of professional equine experience that spans Arizona, Colorado, Wyoming, and South America. Bob grew up on a working ranch in Colorado, holds a Bachelors degree in Agriculture Engineering from Colorado State University, a Masters of Civil Engineering from Arizona State University, and is a Professional Ag Engineer. JoAnn has been involved with horses since she was a small child, helping her grandfather tend to the horses on his ranch in Colorado, and later riding and showing horses in South America. It was at a young age, being first influenced by her grandfather, that JoAnn found her love of horses, and brings over 45 years of ranch management experience. Lou was raised on a 4th generation, family owned cattle ranch in northeast Wyoming working the ranch on horseback. He has a Bachelors degree in Farm and Ranch Management from the University of Wyoming. Rice Quarter Horses operates through their collective efforts with a commitment to breeding and producing the finest quality and versatile horses for the Quarter Horse industry.
